Just because you have hardwood floor, it doesn’t mean that you cannot have your dog running around the house. It is easy to see why you will be concerned, but there are effective and safe ways to clean your flooring of your pet’s urine. The following tips will help you with the cleaning.
1. Clean Up Quickly
If your pet urinates on the hardwood floor, make sure to clean it up immediately. Don’t let the liquid to soak into the wood or dry out. Blot up all the urine using paper towels.
Cleaning your pet’s urine is unlike wiping off water. It has to be deodorized to prevent the smell. This is important not only for your family but also for your dog. If your pet senses the smell of the urine the area, it is going to return there to urinate again.
You can deodorize the area using things available in your home. Sprinkle some baking soda on the area. It is important to do this before the floor becomes dry. Leave the baking soda on the surface for a few hours. You can then clean it up using a vacuum. Fluids are likely to seep outwards and downwards. So you should clean a few inches further around the spot. This will help in deodorizing the area completely.
3. Use a Stain Remover
Soak the spot using an enzyme-based stain remover that could be used on hardwood flooring. It will be best to test it in an area under the furniture to ensure that it doesn’t cause any damage to the wood.
You could also use hydrogen peroxide for the purpose. Pour a few drops on the spot and let it bubble. Once the bubbling stops blot the content using paper towels, you could also soak a rag with hydrogen peroxide to clean up the spot.
Another unique strategy will be to cover the area with paper towels and then sprinkle peroxide over it. Wrap the area using plastic cover and tape it around. Remove the seal only when the towels are dried. This method is considered to be highly effective when there are black stains due to urine.
4. Bleach the Area
You could also use bleach to clean the area. It works as a great deodorizing method. Although it is considered to be one of the best ways to clean and deodorize urine from different types of surfaces, it is important to be careful when using bleach. Take 1 part bleach in 1 part water to clean the area of the smell.
It is recommended to use 2-part peroxide bleach. It is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. It is capable of removing all the color differences that could come on the floor. Bleach can however affect wood with knots with slight lightening effects.
