Thanks Graham. Using Rhododendron seems like a particularly good idea.

Hi Mark
In the Manch demos I used Laurel which makes excellent charcoal- Rhododendron would also be good. Hard woods are generally better- oak and beech for example- but willow charcoal is prized as the best for artists charcoal. Ash would certainly be good. What would not work well I think would be softwoods as in conifers but I have never tried.

Hi. What kind of wood would you say makes the best charcoal? Could you use quick growing trees like ash or willow?

Helped Joe empty the charcoal kiln the other day. Nice batch, from sycamore brash so interesting to see how it performs.looking forward to cooking up some mackerel on it in the next few days. Price of diesel is killing me! Really looks like peak oil and the recession is upon us. Got to keep skilling up! Heard good reports about the course again as per usual. Enjoying the site.fair play-Eoin
