Here in Vic.Australia the State gov has got behind school gardens, funding i think another dozen after the first few were/are a roaring success. In my opinion this is the best way by far for beginners to start producing many different crops even in a small back yard. I started sfg in july 2006 as a total beginner with 16 square foot and had pretty good results. After some initial work making the raised beds, there is no more hard work to do with zero digging and practically no weeding. This amazing system is taylor made for solving the crisis you describe.
